Melbourne United’s club medical staff have confirmed Next Star Ariel Hukporti has ruptured the achilles tendon in his left leg during the club's 27-point win over the Perth Wildcats.

The injury will mean Hukporti will miss the entirety of the NBL23 season.

The news ends what was looking to be a breakout campaign for Hukporti, who was projected to build upon his record-breaking rookie season in the NBL.

Head Coach Dean Vickerman said the news is devastating, and that he and the club will work tirelessly with Hukporti throughout his recovery.

"We’re hurting as a club because of the love we have for Ariel and how much he means to us, not just as an athlete, but as a great person,” he said.

“We’ll be here for him every step of the recovery process and will fully support Ariel with anything he needs during the rehab."

Melbourne United are confident Hukporti will excel throughout his rehab process and build upon his already elite athleticism and skill before returning to the court better than ever.

Having seen Jack White's recovery from a similar achilles injury, United will provide Hukporti with a world class surgeon and use their elite medical staff to ensure his recovery and path towards the NBA remains clear.

Melbourne will play their final game of the NBL Blitz on Friday evening at 8pm against the Brisbane Bullets before opening their NBL23 campaign on October 2 at John Cain Arena against the New Zealand Breakers.
