Melbourne United is excited to announce that Next Star Ariel Hukporti will return to the court for the NBL24 season.

One of the most exciting and impactful players to ever come through the Next Stars program, Hukporti’s return is sure to thrill United fans, who will once again stand witness to his unbelievable athleticism.

The Togolese-German skyscraper finished his debut season in the NBL as the league leader in defensive rating, and became the only player to ever average over a block per game before their 20th birthday.

Speaking to Melbourne United Media, Hukporti touched on his joy following the announcement.

“I’m excited to be staying with United for next season,” he said.

“My only goal is to help bring a championship to this team and our fans, because they have always been there to support me.

“I can’t wait for the moment when I can step back on the court and give this team everything I’ve got.”

In games where Hukporti blocked three or more shots, United were undefeated, highlighting his elite impact on winning.

Head Coach Dean Vickerman voiced his anticipation at seeing Hukporti back on the floor with his side.

"Ariel is a special talent and we're all excited to see him on the floor for United again next season,” he said.

"He showed that he can be an elite player of the defensive end of the floor, and we're confident he'll be able to do the same in NBL24.

"Having him come back as a Next Star has the added bonus of providing us with some more flexibility in roster building across the offseason, which is always important."

After missing the entirety of the NBL23 season with a torn achilles, the big man looks to return to the court stronger than ever.

Melbourne United high performance manager Steve McAdam said Hukporti has rehabbed well and looks ready for Round 1 of NBL24.

“We’ve been able to work on strengthening and improving his whole body during his rehab,” he said.

“He’s spent a lot of time on the court, running hard and working on every part of his game; his ball handling, his shooting, his passing.

“We expect him to be fit and firing for Round 1.”

NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said Hukporti’s return was further validation for the league’s Next Stars program.

“Ariel has unfinished business. We are super excited to see him back out on the court, and I’m sure he’s going to remind us all very quickly why he’s so highly regarded and destined to make a massive impact on the game not only here, but in the NBA in the coming years,” Loeliger said.

“Ariel has grown immensely since joining our League, as a player, as a person and as a phenomenal professional athlete. The way he conducted himself throughout his rehabilitation; staying in Melbourne to encourage and support his teammates throughout the season, was exemplary and speaks to the kind of person he is.

“The pathway between the NBA and NBL is stronger than ever, and Ariel couldn’t be in a better spot to secure the NBA contract he’s long been dreaming of.”
