Joshua Duach joins Melbourne United as a Development Player
Melbourne United is thrilled to announce the signing of exciting young guard Joshua Duach as a Development Player for the next two seasons.
The 19-year-old spent last season playing in the NCAA with the Iona Gaels under legendary coach Rick Pitino, where he helped his side to a 25-8 record as a freshman.
Having returned to Australia after his lone college season, the former Kylsith junior voiced his elation ahead of joining Melbourne United
“I’m super excited, my first pro contract and it’s at home where I grew up.
“Once I got the call that Melbourne United were interested, the decision was a no-brainer for me. I’m at Hoop City all the time, and I just can’t wait to join the group and get started.
“I feel comfortable here already.”
The prospect of developing within United’s elite system, playing alongside players like Matthew Dellavedova, also played into Duach’s decision to sign with Melbourne.
“It’s crazy to think I’m going to be teammates with an NBA Champion like Matthew Dellavedova.
“The entire team, I know I’m just going to learn so much from them, guys like Jack White, Chris Goulding, Shea Ili, I couldn’t think of a better place for me to be.”
With eyes already firmly set on NBL23, Duach can’t wait to show the Melbourne United fans what he can do.
“I think I play an exciting brand of basketball. I like to play above the rim, but I’m also passionate about doing all the little things that win games.
“Hustling on the floor, playing tight defence, moving the ball, I’m going to do whatever it takes to help us win.”
Having watched his development closely, Melbourne United Head Coach Dean Vickerman said he is thrilled to bring Duach into the club’s development system.
“We believe he’s a special talent to bring in at such a young age. He’s a true combo guard, he can assist at both guard spots and that’s going to allow him to jump into different opportunities.
“To have that year with (Rick Pitino) really gave him a skill package and a mentality to be ready to be a pro. We’re fortunate to have such a talented Victorian kid ready to take that jump into professional basketball with us.
“When you talk about his skill package, his speed with the ball as a transition scorer is terrific, His ability to work the pick and roll and his three ball have both improved to a high level, but his elite skill is to be able to be so quick off the bounce, and then go to another level on that second dribble… there’s super speed there.”
Prior to heading to the States, Duach helped Victoria to a Silver Medal at the 2021 Australian Under-20 Championships, where he played alongside Dyson Daniels.
Standing at nearly 200cm, Duach brings elite athleticism and quickness at his size, while showcasing an ability to handle the ball and orchestrate the pick and roll.
Duach will play as a Development Player for NBL23, with United holding an option to elevate him into a full-roster spot for the following season.
