Melbourne United Video Coordinator and Development Coach, Andy Lim, has helped Victoria Metro to a Gold Medal victory at the Foot Locker National Championships over the weekend.
Lim, who was an Assistant Coach with the team, progressed all the way through the tournament, culminating in a thrilling 96-91 Championship Game victory over South Australia Metro.
Having worked closely with United’s coaching staff over the past few years, Lim credited his time with Dean Vickerman as a contributing factor to the team’s success.
“Obviously a lot of hard work went into this tournament so it was really pleasing to see the boys come together in the biggest moments,” he said.
“I can’t speak highly enough of Dean and his staff. I’ve learnt so much as a coach, looking at why we do what we do during our practices.
“It’s been really cool to get the chance to take the knowledge I’ve learnt here and share it with our U18 group.”
One player that played a starring role in the championship victory was Harrison Beauchamp, scoring 31 points.
Beauchamp spent time with Melbourne as a part of the club’s in-season ‘Summer League’ program, while teammate Harry Sewell played a part in a few of United’s scrimmages.
Lim said that the impact of going against bigger pro bodies during the sessions helped them heading into the tournament.
“He (Beauchamp) is someone that has been involved in some of our Summer League runs and worked as an extra in our training sessions when needed.
“He’s a player that’s incredibly talented in his own age group, but it was great to see him come into the United runs against bigger bodies and work on physicality while stretching his game.
“I felt as though those sessions really helped him during this campaign. Henry Sewell was another guy that benefited from his time coming through our program and going up against greater levels of physicality as a big-man.”
As United progress through the offseason, the club will look to hold high-level open runs featuring a mix of promising young players and returning Australian Boomers ahead of the 2024 Olympics.
