Match Preview: 2021 NBL Blitz - Game 2 v Sydney Kings

Following their exciting pre-season debut, Melbourne United will look to remain undefeated in the 2021 Hungry Jack’s NBL Blitz when they match up against the Sydney Kings on Monday evening.

Missing multiple key players, the Kings will be hoping to secure their first win of the pre-season, after going down in a spirited effort against the South East Melbourne Phoenix on Saturday night.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Despite only playing 15 minutes in United’s first game against New Zealand, new recruit Brad Newley made his presence felt on both ends of the court.

Newley tallied 11 points and four rebounds off the bench, while playing staunch defense against NBA Draft hopeful Ousmane Dieng.

Now, going up against the Kings, where he spent his past four campaigns playing, watch for Newley to once again showcase his knowledge and skill.

KEY MATCHUP

After dominating Melbourne’s first outing against the Breakers to the tune of 37 points and 11 rebounds, look for Sydney to throw everything at Jo Lual-Acuil Jr to try and slow the big man down.

Both Jarell Martin and Xavier Cooks will see time against JLA, and will hope to limit his effectiveness around the rim with physical play on the interior.

On the other side of the ball, JLA will have to contend with a pair of bigs unafraid to stretch the floor and let it fly from beyond the arc, despite their limited success against South East Melbourne (1-9 from deep between Martin and Cooks).

THE OTHER GUYS

Just who will be suiting up for the Kings remains a mystery heading into Monday’s contest, as Matur Maker, Makur Maker, Jordan Hunter, Dejan Vasiljevic, Jaylen Adams and R.J. Hunter were all held out from Saturday’s game.

In their absence, expect to see a lot of aggressive plays from Sydney’s guards.

Angus Glover looked lively in his return from injury, Shaun Bruce was his ever-reliable self, and teenage recruit Biwali Bayles injected some great energy off the bench against The Phoenix.

That energy extends to Sydney’s forwards, Wani Swaka Lo Buluk, Jaylin Galloway and Tom Vadanovich all able to cause problems with their defense and activity.
