Melbourne United Multicultural Stories: Josh Duach

Written by Melbourne United Media
After growing up watching Melbourne United showcase the diversity of their city by wearing its Multicultural Jerseys, Josh Duach can’t wait to don the uniform himself on Sunday afternoon.
A first generation South Sudenese-Australian, Duach said he carries a massive sense of pride for what his parents did; coming to Australia to create a better life for their family.
“There’s always a sense of pride there, they fled their country to set up a better life for themselves and their family,” he said.
“I feel like it’s our job to repay them and I feel like I’m doing them proud. I just want to make the most of what they’ve provided for me.”
Coming up in a family with four brothers and one sister, Duach said the competition within his household helped harden him and make him the athlete he is today.
“We’re super competitive, I feel like that’s where I get my nature from. Back then I used to hate losing; I still hate losing. That came from my older brothers and them just picking on me, I guess that helped give me a competitive edge.
“(Now) not so much with the older siblings… they already know what’s going to happen (if we play basketball). My little brother still plays with me but he knows the deal, he’s not going to beat me,” Duach laughed.
Being part of such a multicultural team, which includes three other South Sudenese athletes in David Okwera, Makuach Maluach and Malith Machar, Duach says visibility is huge for younger generations to see.
This was on full display earlier in the season, when the quartet shared the court together.
“(That moment) felt amazing. A little while ago, we probably didn’t think that was possible, so it’s nice to know our work is paying off.
“Seeing more South Sudenese people in Australian sports is huge… It really emphasises how diverse we are as a country and I feel like everyone deserves an opportunity.”
Melbourne will play the South East Melbourne Phoenix on Sunday afternoon in The Multicultural Game, with limited tickets still available!
The day will also feature a Multicultural Festival outside John Cain Arena from 2pm featuring activities, stalls, food, music and much more!
