Melbourne United Sports & Business Program Introduction
Written by MCSC Student Josh Rudzki
My name’s Josh and I am a current student in the 2022 Melbourne United Sports & Business Program, as part of the Melbourne College Sports Careers (MCSC).
Coming out of year 12, like many other students, I was unsure of where I was going to be and what I was going to be doing. However, soon after graduating, I attended the MCSC information night with an open mind.
I was looking forward to hearing about what this program offers to students, and after the information night ended, I knew this was what I wanted to be a part of.
I was instantly engaged with the course and the opportunities that are part of this program, particularly the structured placement work.
To have the chance to learn more about working in professional sport, to learn more about the club itself, and to even offer my own ideas that I knew would be heard, were all opportunities I wanted to experience.
The key to this course is Melbourne United.
The MCSC placements require students to integrate with the Melbourne United organization, where we can learn more about the facets of the business.
Melbourne United have recently located to a brand-new basketball facility, Hoop City in Cheltenham. Besides this venue being where I am studying this Diploma, this is the location where the players train, and the club’s staff run the business upstairs in the office.
All the work for game-days, holiday camps, social media content is all done upstairs, and we as students get access to see and experience how it all works.
This course is a pathway to eight different Tertiary Partners if you want to take your studies further.
I have built connections with staff members, and I am currently completing my hours for my structured placement with the marketing team of Melbourne United.
So far, I have heard from different staff members about their professional journeys and have learnt from different guest speakers about different aspects of sport and business.
An experience that I have been fortunate to be a part of is to volunteer at Melbourne United home games. This includes being involved in all elements of the game-day experience, which always has me on my feet, helping however I can.
To get access behind the scenes in that way is invaluable for my learning and is an opportunity many don’t get, and one that I am very grateful for.
I have also gone out to a variety of schools and venues to assist in running junior holiday camps, which has helped me expand my knowledge and experience in the coaching aspect of the sport.
If you want to join this awesome course, have an open mind walking into the room and you will get the opportunity to put your hand up for any thrilling experiences that Melbourne United offer. Whether that be attending NBL games as a volunteer, helping at clinics, or even assisting the Melbourne United staff on a one-on-one level.
If you want to learn more about the course, the upcoming information night in August, outlines all the benefits to this program, and the potential pathways it can lead to.
