Melbourne United’s Open Air Game is back in NBL23

Melbourne United is excited to announce that the club’s Open Air Game will make its return during the upcoming 2022/23 Hungry Jack’s NBL season.

After two disrupted seasons where the marquee game was not played, the fan-favourite Open Air Game will be back, with tip-off against the Cairns Taipans to be at 7:30pm at John Cain Arena on Friday December 23^rd, 2022.

Since the first Melbourne United Open Air Game was played in 2015, the event has become a regular highlight in the NBL calendar.

The event includes a spectacular pre-game show where fans watch the John Cain Arena roof open, and then enjoy an NBL match played under setting sun and the stars.

Melbourne United’s CEO Nick Truelson spoke of his anticipation for Melbourne United’s Open Air Game making its return.

“At Melbourne United, we are always putting the fan experience at the centre of everything we do. To have the only in-season professional basketball game in the world played in a stadium with an open roof, is something we are really proud of.”

“We focus on pushing the boundaries and aim to be the best in everything we do, particularly when it comes to providing the best live sporting experience in Australia.”

“Due to the Australian Open we can’t get access to John Cain Arena on Boxing Day, which is the traditional date for this game. With that said we feel that the Friday night before Christmas within the school holidays is a great compromise and will be received really well by the fans.”

“After a few years without the Open Air Game, we can’t wait for the game’s return this season.”

With the full 2022/23 Hungry Jack’s NBL season schedule to be announced on Monday July 25, Melbourne United fans will now be looking to the club’s playing roster to see how that comes together.
