United sign Callum Dalton for NBL22

Melbourne United has signed 21-year-old centre Callum Dalton on a one-year deal.

The 207cm Australian native has been a Development Player at the Brisbane Bullets for the past two seasons, taking to the court three times in NBL21. Dalton will join the reigning champions to further bolster the stock of ‘talls’ on the roster.

Dalton enjoyed a promising junior career and has represented Australia at both the FIBA U17 World Championships in 2016, and the FIBA U19 World Championships in 2019. He will now look to take his game to yet another level and make a solid impact on court when called upon at United.

Melbourne United Head Coach Dean Vickerman identified the future potential in Dalton and spoke of his satisfaction in signing the young centre.

“Callum is an impressive young player who has represented Australia at a national level multiple times, and we believe he has a strong future in this league,” Vickerman said.

“Callum chose to go straight into the NBL, rather than take the college route. Similar to how Newley went about starting his pro career, he did his apprenticeship as a development player and takes the next step to full roster.”

“We love the level he is playing at in NBL 1 North at the Gold Coast Rollers. We see him as a versatile high-IQ guy who can step out and stretch the floor.”

“He (Dalton) is a student of the game and has developed well during his time at the Bullets. We think he’ll mix in well with our other bigs and shall come in and compete during pre-season to really earn his spot on this roster.”

“It will be interesting to see how this group battles against each other, and Callum will have his work cut out for him, going up against Jo (Lual-Acuil Jnr), (David) Barlow, Mason Peatling, Ariel Hukporti, David Okwera and Jack White once he’s returned from his injury.”

“Callum will be a welcomed addition to this new group, and we’re excited to have him at Melbourne United.”

Callum Dalton is also the son of Mark Dalton who played over 400 games in the NBL and won an NBL Championship with the Canberra Cannons in 1984. Dalton is also the nephew of former Opals player Karen Dalton, who played for Australia at four world championships and the Olympics in 1984 and 1988.

The NBL22 Melbourne United roster is now one more signing away from being complete.
