The design pays homage to Bunjil and the Wurundjeri people

Melbourne United is excited to unveil our new Indigenous Uniform for the NBL25 season, designed by proud Wurundjeri man, Alex Kerr.

The uniform tells the story of Bunjil - Our Creator. Bunjil is a creator spirit of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung; the First Nations peoples and Traditional Owners of Melbourne (Narrm) and the greater Melbourne area, that forms part of the Kulin Nation.

Bunjil, depicted as a wedge-tailed eagle, flies proudly across the front of the jersey, underneath our ‘NARRM’ wordmark, and on the side of the shorts.

Bunjil is surrounded by Waa (the crow) and his feathers, who is a protector, ensuring that the community is safe while conducting business on Wurundjeri country.

Running down the side of the uniform are depictions of meeting places, where people can come together and collaborate on country, while a portrait of William Barak, the last "ngurungaeta" (Chief) of the Wurundjeri people, features prominently on the back of the shorts.

Kerr, who has also worked extensively with United across our brand refresh, believes his design pays tribute to the rich culture and history of the Wurundjeri people.

“The design is about paying homage to our history, the people that came before us and have been able to provide us with these opportunities,” he explained.

“It’s a real honour to be able to include William Barak as part of the design, as he was someone that worked so hard within the community as an advocate for our people.

“The values that Melbourne United have align with our culture. The sport of basketball is a growing sport for our mob and for a lot of young Indigenous people to have a club and a uniform that they can associate with is great. It furthers the connection they have to their country and to their people.

“It’s so special to have this uniform and this round to show that we all live in this country together, and we all share this awesome culture that people don’t know a lot about.”

Melbourne United will hit the court in these uniforms in Round 8, when we face the Perth Wildcats at home on Saturday 9 November from 8pm.

Fans can get their hands on the uniforms from 10am tomorrow, via our merch store.
