Matthew Dellavedova believes United’s historic assist numbers are fuelled by the team’s high IQ players

As we approach our can’t miss Hungry Jack’s Playoff Series against the Perth Wildcats, it’s worth breaking down the historically strong offence that helped get us to this point.

Over the course of the regular season, we averaged more assists per game (21.2) than any team in the modern 40 minute era, with Matthew Dellavedova’s 7.1 assists per game leading the group.

Speaking ahead of the series, Dellavedova said he believes the team’s historic assist numbers are a result of a collective high basketball IQ and great chemistry.

“We have a group of unselfish guys who just want to win, but also who have high IQs and understand spacing, cutting and screening angles,” he said.

“We obviously have a lot of weapons shooting the ball and scoring. We’ve got some great pick-and-roll targets, we’ve got some great pick-and-pop targets and I think everyone just enjoys moving the ball and seeing each other succeed.

“I think you build chemistry and understanding with guys the longer you play with them, but that doesn’t happen without each guy wanting to get better and seeing the game in a certain way.

“I think it’s fun when you build that chemistry with someone, obviously I’ve played with CG for a long time and, you know, it’s fun when you know what the other person’s thinking and it could just be a look or a head nod or a movement of the eyes and the other person knows what you’re thinking.”

Fans will get their next opportunity to see this elite chemistry on display in Game 1 of our Playoff Series against the Perth Wildcats on Thursday 27 February from 8pm at John Cain Arena.
