‘You’re getting some fire’ says Cameron’s former coach
Written by Melbourne United Media
Before even stepping foot on an NBL court, Melbourne United’s Flynn Cameron has established his reputation within the basketball community.
The son of Kiwi basketball royalty Pero Cameron, Flynn carved out his role throughout five years of NCAA hoops, three of which came at UC Riverside under Head Coach Mike Magpayo.
Across those three seasons, Cameron started 86 of 88 games for the Highlanders while building his standing as a leader of the team.
Magpayo, who is in Australia for a scouting trip, spoke to MU Media about what the organisation and its fans can expect from his former star guard.

“He’s been a leader and captain from the minute he stepped on campus,” he said.
“You’re getting an elite competitor and he is going to bring it every day, at practice, in the weight room and on the court… You’re getting some fire.
“He was the heart and soul of our team, he led us in that way, he was our grit and he’ll be bringing that to Melbourne United for sure.”
While this is slated to be Cameron’s first professional season, Magpayo has no doubts about his ability to smoothly transition into the NBL.
“He has great size for a guard, whether it’s as a point guard or an off guard, he’s all of 6’5, long, strong and physical.
“I think that playing for the national team in New Zealand last year was humongous for him. He came back a different man, more than a different basketball player.
“I think coming back and getting that Bronze Medal in the FIBA Asia Cup really gave him a lot of confidence that he belonged.
“I think that he is just touching the surface… You have a guy that’s going to defend, rebound that can also shoot the ball and can now make plays off the bounce.”
Cameron is set to finish his schooling in California before heading over to Melbourne to start the preseason training camp with United.
